Leave the awkward matchy matchy awkward portraits in the 80s

Outfit choices can feel overwhelming for yourself, let alone when trying to dress the whole family. Let me take the hassle out of how to select the right outfits that will work for each of you while coordinating together to create something beautiful.

Coordinate, don’t match

There’s a difference between selecting a colour palette and style that complements your family and the location of your photographs and matching outfits that feel like you have a family uniform,

A good rule of thumb for families is to start with the youngest child, or a dress Mum will be wearing, and pull colours from the pattern, or colours that complement. Then work through the family. Using layers of clothing, jackets, cardigans, or beautiful accessories like scarves, tights, hats, jewellery will give a natural edge and style to the outfits.

Each family member should allow their own style to shine through, but in a subtle way. Avoid fad items like logos and chunky sneakers. These photographs will hang on the wall long after the fad has disappeared, think classic style.

Family uniforms are never the way to go.

Choose your colour palette with care

Colour can have a strong impact on your photography. Consider the location, and colours within that environment.

Think about pastels, earthy tones, warm tones, shades of blue. Start with a selection of 4 colours in a tonal family. A well selected colour palette will tie everyone together effortlessly, and avoid the uniform feel.

Even with teens choosing an outfit within the boundary of your chosen colours, will coordinate, but also allow them to shine with their style.

Another element to consider is where in your home will your family photographs will hang? A room of warm, earthy tones will clash with some outfit choices, just as a bright colourful room may see a beautiful image with natural tones get lost in the shuffle, so it pays to think ahead.

Don’t forget about the shoes

Your outfits have been carefully curated and looking perfect, so don’t throw off the balance with a ratty pair of shoes.

Keep footwear in mind when pulling together your outfits.

Even if you’re planning a beach shoot and plan on being barefoot (a great option!), to not have outfit appropriate shoes with you to put on may see you miss out on some great locations (climbing on rocks, running along a jetty, etc.) at the same location. For Winter shoots, consider kids in gumboots that fit your colour palette – makes for a great puddle jumping opportunity too.

We can even video call while you go through your wardrobe and we can help you plan. Beyond a call, the best advice is just go neutral. A natural colour palette suits every skin tone. Browns, creams, and beige are always in style, suit every skin tone, and are generally something in every person’s wardrobe. Build difference in outfits with texture like a chunky knit or lace.
